Palmetto GBA Wins Major Medicare Contract

The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has selected Palmetto GBA as the Medicare Administrative Contractor for Jurisdiction J, which includes the states of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Jurisdiction J represents 7 percent of the national Part A/Part B claim-volume workload. These contracts are awarded following a competitive bidding process.

The five-year contract will employ more than 460 administrative and professional employees within Palmetto GBA offices in Alabama and South Carolina. Palmetto GBA will begin conducting extensive outreach to health care providers, state medical associations and beneficiaries to provide education and information about the transition. It will assume full responsibility for Part A claims by the end of January and Part B claims by the end of February 2018.

“It is truly an honor for Palmetto GBA to be awarded this contract,” said Palmetto GBA President and Chief Operating Officer Joe Johnson. “Palmetto GBA works continuously to improve the administration of the Medicare program by offering innovative solutions to complex problems and providing excellent service. We look forward to serving the beneficiaries and health care providers of Jurisdiction J.”

According to CMS, Jurisdiction J includes more than 2.5 million Medicare beneficiaries, more than 52,000 physicians and 400 hospitals that serve Medicare patients. Medicare Part A helps cover fees from hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and other institutional providers. Part B covers fees from physicians, laboratories and other practitioners.

CMS has stringent standards for contract performance and measures performance through a variety of processes, including on-site oversight, data reviews and protocol-driven quality assurance reviews, as well as independent audits.
